Job Description
Responsibilities
Your daily responsibilities will include:
- You will manage and nurture PesaCheck’s in-country journalists, overseeing their day-to-day research, helping develop their skills and knowledge, and keeping them on schedule to meet agreed deadlines and other deliverables.
- You will select and prioritize editorial leads for your journalists from PesaCheck’s various editorial tip lines or algorithmic ‘listening’ or media monitoring tools to help ensure we focus our attention on the most harmful misinformation/conspiracies
- You will facilitate daily editorial planning meetings at which editorial leads/assignments are brainstormed and allocated to in-country journalists/researchers, with clear editorial briefs and submission deadlines.
- You will, with the support of your Newsdesk Assistants, ensure that journalists meet agreed editorial targets and production schedules while adhering to PesaCheck’s ethical and editorial policies and standards.
- You will ensure the accuracy, clarity, fairness, and appropriateness of all draft content, and will ensure that journalists respond promptly to any queries or requests by the copy desk or other support teams.
- You will, in consultation with other editors, make suggestions on explanatory infographics or other multimedia/visual elements for the graphic or data teams to produce to accompany fact-checks.
- You will, with the support of Newsdesk Assistants and CfA’s technology team, manage PesaCheck’s various databases and digital tools for tracking, matching, and analyzing misinformation.
- You will, in consultation with other editors, proactively identify editorial challenges, ranging from skills gaps to conflict or censorship, that impact on PesaCheck’s research and you will also proactively identify other production bottlenecks that erode PesaCheck’s ability to quickly debunk emerging misinformation narratives.
- You will, with input from the Managing Editor, drive the refinement of PesaCheck’s editorial style guide and newsdesk ‘playbook’ (operational manual) and editorial policies to help journalists better understand their role and content production guidelines.
Minimum Requirements
- Demonstrable newsdesk editorial management skills honed during at least five years managing teams of journalists in a mainstream media or equivalent digital publishing environment.
- Demonstrable understanding of the step-by-step production process for creating well-researched and substantiated news reports, including familiarity with editorial diaries/schedules, editorial workflow, and content assignment/deadline management.
- Meticulous attention to detail, with the ability to work with congeniality in a fast-paced deadline-driven environment. This includes being an organizational whiz who can prioritize multiple simultaneous tasks, while at the same time having the people skills needed to engage diplomatically and collaborate effectively with colleagues under tight deadlines.
- Robust critical thinking, and strong research and investigative skills, with good general knowledge and interest in current affairs.
- Proven track record for creative problem-solving in fast-paced impact-driven environments, where solutions involve balancing human and production considerations.
- Demonstrable ability to self-manage, creating your own as well as wider team timelines and milestones with clear systems/processes.
- Proficiency in collaborative work solutions such as Google Workplace (Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, etc.), Slack (or equivalents such as Teams), and project management tools like Trello (or equivalents).
Preferred:
Candidates who can demonstrate the following will have an advantage:
- Previous experience in a fact-checking or editorial verification newsroom.
- In-depth knowledge about ‘information disorder’ and the differences between misinformation and disinformation and mal-information, as well as conspiracist content and hate speech.
- Working knowledge of French, and/or Arabic, in addition to the African languages within PesaCheck’s 13-country focus area.
Language and Location Requirements:
- Location: East Africa, or anywhere else in Africa.
- Languages: English required (French, Arabic, Kiswahili, Amharic helpful).

Program Officer – Media Buying at Breakthrough ACTION Nigeria
Job Description
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Development of media buying strategy, media plan budgeting, and management of all the project’s media investments and relations including monitoring and verification of compliance before payment.
- Deeply understand the target audience and demographics for each BA-N thematic area and develop media campaigns in line with it.
- Research best platforms, mediums, and channels to reach the demographics and achieve strategic goals
- Identify, negotiate, and purchase airtime from broadcasters in all BA-N states and ensure a good return on investment (ROI)
- Maintaining weekly and monthly monitoring reports of all BA-N spots and programs in radio and TV stations in all BA states
- Manage media monitoring processes including the hiring of media monitoring agencies and independent monitors, training of media monitors, ensuring compliance process is well recorded
- Work closely with the project finance and procurement team to manage vendor agreements and ensure timely payments to media partners.
- Maintaining regular and ongoing communications with media and non-media partners, keeping them up to date on relevant broadcast developments, and reflecting their feedback to the organization.
- Generating relationships with new media partners and training partners on BA-N processes for effective compliance.
- Working with the media team to negotiate for transmission/broadcast time for all BA-N programs.
- Ensure productivity and cost share on all approved media plans and programs from the media teams.
- Keeping good records of all BA-N media contents and their broadcast status.
- Perform any other duties that may be assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- This position has direct supervisory responsibilities to two program assistants.
Qualifications
- A Degree in Marketing, Advertising, Communications, or any equivalent experience
- 5 years experience as a media strategist, coordinator, planner, or buyer
- At least 1-year experience working with a media buying agency in any of the listed roles
- Experience managing brands for effective media compliance, with knowledge of the media monitoring landscape in Nigeria
- Strong written, verbal, and presentation communication skills
- Demonstrated experience in negotiating, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to utilize media research and reporting resources
- Technical proficiency in media systems and MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

Media Assistant (NYSC) – Breakthrough ACTION Nigeria
Job Description
Specific Duties 1 – Social Marketing
- Follow up with the media houses for their monthly invoices by sending reminders
- Support correction of errors on the received invoices
- Support collation of reports, invoices, and COTs for review
- Assist in the monthly deployment of materials and schedules
- Ensure payments to the stations and monitors are made on time, keep a register to track payments, and follow up with the finance team
- Support collation of complementary cost share forms, letters, and COTs
- Other jobs as needed.
Specific Duties 2 – Content Creation and Production
- Support in holding auditions to identify suitable roles and voices for audio-visual content.
- Support in workshops, training, and script writing workshops.
- Support in preparing relevant documentation for voice-over artists, actors, writers, and translators.
- Support in sourcing suitable writers and translators.
- Run rehearsals with actors and voice-over artists on location/studio.
- Follow up and ensure payments to artists, actors, translators, and writers are executed at the appropriate time.
Qualification
- HND or Bachelor’s Degree in Social sciences, Mass communication, Theatre / Dramatic Arts, or other relevant fields
- Basic Powerpoint, Excel, and Microsoft Word skills.
- Creative thinking
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Good writing skills
- Fluency in English is required
- The ability to speak, read or write any other Nigerian language/languages and a good working skill in adobe audition is an added advantage.

- Candidates must be within 3 months from the commencement date of their NYSC Orientation Camp
