Lagos is majorly divided into two parts, "The mainland” and "The Island”. The Lagos mainland and Island are so different in lifestyle and way of life, and their mode of transportation is also different. The popular belief of Lagosians is that people on the Island are the wealthy people of Lagos. To some extent, they are justified because the cost of living on the island is very much more expensive than living on the mainland. The Average Daily Income of An Uber Driver in Lagos From the Mainland and Island Perspective

From the Mainland Perspective

According to an Uber driver on the Mainland "There are fewer people who use Uber on the mainland, so although, the customers may book from the mainland, I usually end up on the island every day because there are more people who are ready to pay for Uber on the island”. He further mentioned that on the days that he did not get trips to the island, his income was on the known side. However, the Uber app is also a great advantage for him because it helps to connect him to the customers around his location and he does not have to pay any NURTW charges. The only factor is that there are fewer people on the mainland who are willing to pay that much for transport when they can easily get Keke Napep or commercial buses or bikes. According to the Uber driver on the mainland, if he starts the day as early as 6 a.m. during the rush hours, he can make around 10 to 15 trips in a day. Although these trips are not predictable, he mentioned he can make between 20,000 NGN to 30,000 NGN per day. Also, in this income, the Uber company will deduct their own 25% for connecting the customers to him. In the end, an Uber driver on the mainland is likely to make an average daily income of 15,000 NGN to 22,000 NGN without the deduction of fuel or other mechanical charges.

From the Island Perspective

The Island Uber driver stated, "Working on the island is more profitable and faster compared to when he used to work on the mainland, He mentioned that he gets more trips now as there is no shortage of customers who are willing to book a ride on the island and will even give extra tips to the drivers”. He further said, being on the island put him on known territories as the island is more organized than the mainland. With a more structured driving people who book rides on the island are mostly people who are interested in short distances but would not mind paying the extra charges. According to him, if he started his day early around 6 am, he could make around 15 to 25 trips in one day because the roads are better and there is no shortage of customers to pick. Although there is no fixed rate for the charges, his estimated daily income after the day trips and Uber 25% deduction is estimated to be around 25,000 NGN to 35,000 NGN without fuel or any other mechanical charges.
