After the Lagos state government stopped the movement of bikes in Lagos, Marwa became the new "King of fast movement” in Lagos. Lagosians prefer their "Keke Napep”. The Keke Napep is another Name for Marwa in Lagos. Their reason is, it is fast and easy to get. You will find Keke Napep in almost all corners of the street of Lagos. The Keke Napep is generally painted Yellow and Black in Lagos. And they are also under the NURTW (National Union of Road Transport Workers). In this article, we will talk about the daily income of Marwa drivers in Lagos and all the factors that can contribute to their income daily.
If you live in Lagos, you will understand from experience how the streets of Lagos are always filled with Lagosians hustling for transportation to their places of work or wherever they need to be especially during the "Rushing hours” in Lagos. The rushing hours are usually 3 times in Lagos, firstly within the time of 7 am to 10 am (Usually the time that almost everyone is rushing to get to work), secondly between the time of 2 pm and 5 pm (The time government workers and teachers usually close from work and are on their way home from work), and lastly 6 pm to 10 pm (The 9 to 5 workers and artisans are on their way home).
Factors That Determine the Daily Income Of A Marwa Driver In Lagos
Marwa Drivers are flooding the streets of Lagos and personally, it is my favorite mode of transport ever since Lagos State has restricted the movement of bikes in several places around Lagos State. Talking about their daily income, I had a conversation with some Marwa drivers some months back on different occasions. I just wanted to know if driving Keke Napep is so profitable that the number of owners of Keke Napep keeps increasing every day. And they were kind enough to share some insight. Here is an explanation from 3 different Marwa Drivers In Lagos on some factors that contribute to their income.
Marwa Driver One replied by saying "The Keke Napep is very profitable because it is fast and can work in all areas of Lagos without government laws stopping them but the major problem that determines his income is the money several NURTW agents on the road will collect from them”, he further explained that sometimes, they can pay up to 8 different NURTW agents on the road before they drop their passengers. He continued explaining by stating that the Marwa carries 4 passengers at a time, and they always try not to move too far due to the Lagos traffic, so transporting 4 people from one place to another and charging each of them 300 Naira equals charging 1,200 Naira per trip, on an average day, the NURTW agents are likely to collect 300 or 400 Naira from that 1200 Naira he has made per trip. And he can make around 10 to 15 trips in one day. From the explanation of Marwa Driver One, he makes roughly 10,000 to 15,000 per day without deducting fuel or any other charges he needs to pay.
Marwa Driver Two replied by saying "Keke Napep is Profitable when you own it yourself because, in a lot of cases, some of them do not own it by themselves, they collect from the real owners and use it or the owners have other businesses and they buy this Keke Napep as an extra source of income. They give it to people who are interested in riding them and they collect what they call "Deliver money” which means, they deliver a certain agreed amount of money at a time they have both agreed on” and until you find delivering and paying up all the money, you can not keep all of your profits to yourself. He further explained that in his own Park where he works, he can carry people for 400 Naira per person and he will carry 4 people at a time which is 1,600 Naira per trip, and on an average day, He can go on about 12 to 17 trips which is around 19,200 Naira to 27,200 Naira per day without deduction of his deliver money or any other charges he has to pay.
Marwa Driver Three replied by saying "My Keke Napep makes a lot of money if fewer Keke Napep owners come to the park in a day” he explained that the higher the number of Keke Napep Owners at the Park, the lower his daily income on that day. This is a result of not getting customers on time because there are several Keke Napep at the park. He mentioned that on an average day, he works a very short distance and charges 200 naira per person while carrying 4 passengers which is a total of 800 Naira per trip. He said he can go on an average trip of 16 to 20 per day which can come to a total of 12,800 Naira or 16,000 Naira per day.
With the above conversations with different Marwa or Keke Napep owners, it is obvious that there is no specific daily income for Marwa Drivers in Lagos. There are various factors that determine their income, some of which are – The Distance the Marwa driver covers per trip, The number of NURTW agents they give money to on each trip, The number of Marwa Owners in a specific park, The time of the day, The ownership of the Keke Napep and so many more.
