The University of Ilorin may now be named after Sheik Alimi

The popular Unilorin, also known as the University of Ilorin may soon change its name to Sheik Alimi Varsity.

This idea was proposed by the community members to the federal government, stating that the university was founded by the Sheik and it is honourable to name it after him.

At a recent conference that happened at the emir's palace, Alhaji Otta Uthman, the President of the Ilorin Emirate Descendant Progressive Union, on behalf of the people made this appeal to the government - that they ask government office leaders, business leaders, and local government chairpersons within the Ilorin Emirate's five local government areas to exhibit the Emir of Ilorin's portrait alongside the official pictures of the President and governor in their offices from now on.

The IEDPU president also took time to appreciate the state government for its support so far but also chipped in the importance of bringing the Kwara State University to the centre where it is very much visible. He also mentioned that Kwara State University of Science and Technology in Ilorin was created. According to him, the institution would nurture the talents of local people, allowing them to enhance their innovative skills and receive qualifications vital for the technological and economic progress of not just the state but the entire country.

Renaming the University of Ilorin, according to Otta Uthman, will serve as a tribute to Sheikh Alimi ibn Solihu ibn Janta, who established the Alimi Dynasty. He also pinpointed that this renaming follows suit with universities named after other notable historical figures like Uthman Danfodiyo and Modibo Adama, which is long overdue and would similarly honor Sheikh Alimi's legacy.

“In the light of these precedencies, we fervently call on the state government to take our request for the renaming of the University of Ilorin as ‘Sheikh Alimi University, Ilorin’ in honor of the founder of the southernmost Emirate in Nigeria to the National Assembly through the Senator representing Kwara Central Senatorial District and his colleagues in the House of Representatives. We know our representatives are up to the task and it's our hope that the state government would do the needful to actualize this noble course," the IEDPU president established.

The governor of Kwara State, Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq acknowledged the concerns presented by the IEDPU president and pledged to revitalize and expand Ilorin, the state capital, to prevent any form of deterioration. He also encouraged the IEDPU leadership and all residents of Ilorin Emirate to support the government's initiatives aimed at improving the state for the benefit of everyone living there.
