OpenAI opens a New Board Slate with Sam Altman Back as CEO and Greg Brockman as Board Chair

A whole lot has happened in the past few weeks at the OpenAI HQ, but now it looks like the company has been able to get a final grip on the leadership. In the space of two weeks, there have been a couple of shuffling in, shuffling out, exemptions, and unnecessary exits.

However, on the 29th of November, 2023, Open AI said in a press release that the saga is over as Greg Brockman returns as president of the board, Mira Mirayi as the Chief Technology Officer, and Sam Altman as CEO. 

To confirm this development, Sam Altman, alongside his new board chairman, Bret Taylor shared a message with the company saying " I am returning to OpenAI as CEO. Mira will return to her role as CTO. The new initial board will consist of Bret Taylor (Chair), Larry Summers, and Adam D’Angelo." 

"I have never been more excited about the future. I am extremely grateful for everyone’s hard work in an unclear and unprecedented situation, and I believe our resilience and spirit set us apart in the industry. I feel so good about our probability of success in achieving our mission." He expressed. 

Also in his letter to the company, he took his time to share some thanks to several people in the company which includes the leadership team–Mira, Brad, Jason, Che, Hannah, Diane, Anna, Bob, Srinivas, Matt, Lilian, Miles, Jan, Wojciech, John, Jonathan, Pat, and many more. 

However, he didn't fail to mention that the company had three immediate priorities at hand which included; 

  • Advancing their research plan and further investing in full-stack safety efforts, which have always been critical to their work. 

  • Continuous improvement and deployment of products and serving their customers. (He revealed that he would be working with Brad, Jason, and Anna on this to ensure that unwavering commitment to users, customers, partners, and governments around the world is clear. 

  • Building out a board of diverse perspectives, improving governance structure, and overseeing an independent review of recent events. (He also stated that Bret, Larry, and Adam will be working on this). 

Sam closed his letter by saying that he is really looking forward to working with the whole team and also finishing the job of building a beneficial Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) with everyone on the team.
