Oando: Company Profile, Culture, and General Overview

Oando PLC is one of the most popular and thriving integrated energy solutions providers in Africa. The company was founded in 1956 and now, it has listings on both the Nigerian Stock Exchange and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. Headquartered in Lagos, the Oando Group houses two giant companies - Oando Energy Resources and Oando Trading

History

Oando began when Esso Africa was formed in 1956. Esso Africa majored as a downstream marketing company but was later rebranded as Unipetrol Nigeria in 1976 to increase the production and availability of petroleum products in the hinterland. Fast forward to March 1, 1991, Unipetrol became a Public Limited Company and in the same year, 60% equity was sold to the Nigerian Public in an initial public offering. The following year, Unipetrol was listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange.

Unipetrol bought a 40% stake in Gaslink Nigeria Limited in the year 1999, and the company increased its stake to 51% in 2001. Another 30% stake was acquired in 2000 by Adewale Tinubu and Omamofe Boyo, owners of Ocean and Oil Private Investment Company in the year 2000. In 2001, Ocean and Oil had topped up its stake in Unipetrol by another 12%. In 2002, Ocean and Oil spearheaded Unipetrol's attempt to acquire a 60% share in Agip Nigeria Plc. Following the merger, the combined entity was rebranded as Oando PLC in 2003, establishing itself as the leading downstream petroleum marketing company in Nigeria.

In 2005, Oando Energy Services was created to fulfill the group's objective in the Upstream services industry, and by 2007, the company has acquired two oil drilling rigs in Nigeria. Oando Energy Services emerged as Nigeria's first indigenous oil company with an interest in producing deepwater assets in 2007.  Year in and year out, even until now, Oando Plc has elevated the standard in the Nigeria Oil industry.
