Nigerian Law School increases school fee by almost 200%

In Nigeria, to be finally called to bar and certified as a practicing lawyer, you must attend the Nigerian Law School for a year, write the exams, and pass very well. This has been the system of things and it has happened consistently over the years with the Law School producing more and more lawyers. However, it looks like the story is about to change as the recent action taken by the school management might make it difficult for more University graduates to attend the Nigerian Law school and be called to bar as a Lawyer.

What is happening with the Nigerian Law School?

There have been different reactions from the public as the Nigerian Law School, Abuja increases school fees from N295,000 to N476,000. The message of the increase was sent to the students currently enrolled in the 2023/2024 academic session on the 16th of November, 2023 via a circular. This news is coming at a very wrong time as the current economy of the country doesn't not look good for this type of outrageous increase.

Considering that there were actually people who even still struggled to pay the initial N295,000 and now that it is N476,000, many other people may also find it difficult to attend the Nigerian Law School in the long run.

The minimum wage is N33,000 but law school students have to pay almost N500,000 to study which doesn't exactly sit well with many Nigerians.

What are people saying about the increase in the school fees?

The new development has attracted several responses from the public, especially the currently enrolled law school students and graduates of the school. A good number of people have talked about how N476,000 is not a good investment for law school because, at the end of the day, firms, companies, and organizations in Nigeria will not pay them according to how much they have put into being lawyers.

The Nigerian Law school resumes later this month and law students are expected to respond to the new development. This information has sent a lot of students into panic, despair, and even uncertainty. Also, some people fear that by next year, another increase would have happened and as usual, Nigerians would find a way to pay the bills instead of fighting back at the government.

To lessen the tension the new story has brought on the students, some non-profit organizations and even influencers have started to solicit help for students who will not be able to pay their school fees this session. The hope of most people going to the Nigerian Law school this year may have been shattered but we believe that they will get all of the dreams that need to achieve their dreams.
