Mark Zuckerberg: Meta Decides to Fire Thousands of Employees

It is no longer news that there were massive Meta layoffs with the media company headed by Mark Zuckerberg. The Meta company, who is the parent to WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook decided to lay off around 13% of their workers. The number of employees sacked was estimated to be around 11,000 workers. Also, we have other companies like Twitter, Apple Inc., Amazon, and Alphabet Inc, who have said they will stop employing more staff or cut jobs due to fear of inflation and recession.

So many people have expressed their displeasure about the layoffs from the media giant, Facebook. The company has been criticized for not being thoughtful about reducing her workforce when recession fears are looming. They feel it will cause a tough time for the employees who were laid off. This has raised a lot of opinions, with people saying Mark Zuckerberg was not thoughtful about the layoffs.

"Today I'm sharing some of the most difficult Changes we've ever made at Meta."

"I've made the decision to let more than 11,000 of our perfect employees go to lower the size of our workforce by around 13%. We are also reducing discretionary spending and extending our hiring freeze through Q1 to become a smaller and more effective firm."

I want to be responsible for the decision and what brought us here. I am sure it is a tough moment for everyone, especially the ones that were affected by the Meta Layoffs. This is one of the most difficult changes we have made in Meta's History. There is no getting past the fact that this is a sad time. I want to express my gratitude once more to those departing for their contributions to this establishment, he said.

The Reason Behind the Mass Meta Layoffs

When COVID-19 first began, the world was moving quickly online, and the e-commerce boom caused an astronomical increase in revenue. Many individuals believed that this acceleration would last forever and carry on long after the pandemic was over. I decided to dramatically boost our investments because I felt the same way. Sadly, things did not turn out the way I had anticipated. Online sales have not only resumed their previous patterns, but our revenue has also fallen far short of what I had anticipated due to the financial slump, increasing competition, and loss of ad signal. I acknowledge that I made a mistake in this.

We need to become more capital efficient in this changed environment. More of our resources are now going toward a smaller number of high priority development sectors, such as our AI discovery engine, our advertising and commercial platforms, and our long-term metaverse strategy. We have reduced expenses across the board, including budgets, benefits, and the size of our real estate portfolio. Teams are being reorganized to improve productivity. But, these steps won't be enough to bring our costs into line with our income increase, so I've also had to make the difficult choice to let employees go.

Some teams will be impacted more than others even though we are making reductions across the whole Family of Apps and Reality Labs organization. Since we want to hire fewer workers next year, recruiting will be adversely affected. Additionally, we are significantly revamping our business teams. What next for sacked employees?

After the Meta Layoff, Zuckerberg said, There is no ideal way to carry out a layoff, but we intend to give you all the pertinent information as soon as we can after which we will do everything in our power to support you. Everyone will shortly get an email informing them of the implications of this layoff. Each affected employee will then have the chance to talk with someone, get their queries answered.

  • Severance. We will pay 16 weeks of basic salary plus an added two weeks for each year of service.

  • Health protection. For six months, we'll pay the expense of healthcare for individuals and their families.
  • Career aid. With an outside vendor, we'll offer three months of career support that includes early access to unreleased employment leads.

Everyone will have time to arrange and resolve their immigration situation because of the notice period before termination and some visa grace periods. Who were Affected By the Meta Layoff

The mass Meta Layoff affected so many people from Africa and India. Report has it that some of the 11,000 workers laid off are Indian techies who just left their job to secure positions and switched to Meta, few days to the layoff were affected. Neelima Agarwal, an IT professional who recently joined Meta, announced on Linkedin that she was one of those who had lost their jobs.

"Just a week after moving to Canada from India, I joined Meta following a lengthy visa application procedure. But the regrettable sad day has come, and I was fired, "She remarked.

According to her LinkedIn page, Neelime quit her two-year position at the Microsoft Office in Hyderabad to join Meta Vishwajeet Jha claimed he joined Meta three days . ago and has since been let off after spending more than three years working at the Amazon office in Bengaluru. "After enduring the drawn-out visa application process, I joined Meta three days ago. We appreciate everyone who helped make that move seamless. Really regretful that this occurred, my thoughts are with everyone impacted by the layoffs, "Jha wrote.

Although no country-specific figures have yet been made public, Meta's India crew is seeking for hints about what the future may hold.

In his 16 years in the US, Raju Kadam, a member of Meta's technical team, claimed he had never experienced a job loss.

"I have an H1-B visa, and today is the first day that I can leave the US. Despite witnessing the 2008, 2015 (oil), and 2020 recessions over my 16 years in the US, I have never lost my work, he continued, saying that his sons, who are US citizens, will be affected in some way".

Anneka Patel who was the communication manager at Facebook, also said she was laid off. On her LinkedIn account she said, "This morning I found out I was one of the 11,000 employees affected through the Meta Layoff. This hit me hard as I am currently out on maternity leave".
