How to handle being underrated at work

For many reasons, people can be underrated at work, it may be due to stereotypes, personal bias, poor communication skills, or even stature. Being underrated at work can pose a negative impact on the output and productivity of an individual. Apart from being less productive, such a person can find it hard to grow career-wise and achievements will start to look impossible to them. While this may be a very hard phase for the affected individuals, they cannot continue to wallow in inadequacy. If growth is paramount to them, they have to adopt ways to combat the situation. Everyone wants to be seen and heard; therefore, we have listed a few ways to handle being underrated at work:

You need to speak up more often

If you are being undervalued or underappreciated at work, it may be that you have been perceived as someone who cannot stand up for yourself when necessary. This way you need to communicate more and better; talk about something impressive you did in the previous week, and contribute meaningful suggestions that will yield effective results, regardless of how hard you may find these things, do them! Speaking up is the very first step you need to take to liberate yourself.

Be heavy on your wins

Even when you are making big waves, it is possible that you don't get impressed about the whole thing because a significant amount of people do not rate you well. However, It is important to note that not everyone would appreciate you or your work and that's okay. Rather than dwelling on external validation that may even cause you to think low of yourself, recognize your wins and let them serve as motivation to you. This way, your priority shifts from listening to their opinions to getting better at what you do.

Check to see what others are doing differently

On the flip side, the problem may be that you are not doing enough. So, you may take time to do a reality check on yourself to assess the areas that need improvement. These areas may include, communication, dress sense, or networking. Also, you can seek honest opinions from random co-workers, listen to them, and put their opinions to good use. When they suggest areas for growth and development, accept the suggestions and work towards improving in the stated areas.

Initiate appreciation

Understandably, you may find it hard to willingly appreciate your colleagues when you are not getting even the slightest encouragement or appreciation from them. The trick is that you may need to start doing it, sincerely appreciate your co-workers when they pull off a brilliant task, when they make a beautiful presentation, let them know. You never can tell who would eventually learn and start doing the same to you. Also, in a way, you are making an impact, creating a positive work environment, and building relationships.

Recognize your strengths and intensify them

If there is anything you are good at doing professionally, don't stop! Amplify your unique areas and make even greater contributions to your team. Search to see what you enjoy doing the most, what you are naturally good at, and what task seems exact and excellent for you; Identify these areas and develop them further.

Decide if you can continue at your present workplace

You may be too underrated at work that it starts to tell on your deliverables. Now, this is where you decide whether you can continue or not. If you are not getting the improvement that you need, you should start exploring other job options where your skills and experience will be more appreciated. While you may be tired and see quitting as the best option, take time to weigh your options, if the salary is more important to you, there may be a need to rethink. Furthermore, consider other options which may include proximity to the workplace, job security, work-life balance, and more. Most importantly, double-check to be sure that you are ready to move towards another phase.

No one finds it easy when it seems like their hard work is unnoticed. Everyone wants to be appreciated for their efforts and contributions to a work or project. However, if you find yourself in an environment that does not appreciate your talent well enough, don't beat yourself up over it. Put in a little work! Explore the tips listed above, and give yourself enough validation for every magic you make.
