How to Become an NURTW Member

If you are looking to become an NUTRW member, it means that you have decided to join the road transport workforce in Nigeria. NURTW stands for National Union of Road Transport Workers, a body focused on transport workers, dedicated to standing up to the interest of its members and collectively making decisions that will promote societal harmony within the sector. According to an article published by the ITF global, NURTW of Nigeria, founded in 1978 currently has over 2 million registered members consisting of different types of road workers.

Who can become a NURTW member?

Anyone who uses their vehicle for commercial purposes can become a NURTW member. This means that if you use any type of vehicle - a cab, bus, tricycle, or motorcycle for business, you can decide to join the union. Although membership is voluntary, you still have to pay your dues because it is important to maintain the function of the union.

Roles and Responsibilities of the NURTW

  • Regulation and coordination of activities within the road transport unit.

  • Ensuring that law and order are maintained at motor parks and garages.

  • Keeping track of the welfare of the union members.

  • Promoting the importance of road safety.

  • Settling disputes among members, collecting dues, and organizing activities that can foster oneness.

Becoming a Member of the NURTW

If you have made up your mind to join the union, here are simple steps you can take to fix your membership:

Locate the NURTW branch closest to you

The NURTW has a presence in every state and this means that commercial drivers can be a part of the union from anywhere. All you need to do is find the branch nearest to you in the city you reside. Regardless of your residency, there is always a union office to walk into.

Purchase your Registration Form

Right there at the branch, registration forms are available for sale. So, ask to buy a form, you can fill it in at the office or take it home. The most important thing is to return the form filled to the data registration center where all of your information will be included in the NURTW database. Afterward, your data goes to the state coordinator who reviews the registration.

Return to your Branch for Your Biometric Verification

After all forms have been sold and registration is closed, the biometric-enabled data registration will commence for everyone who has purchased their forms. You are to visit the capturing center with a copy of the form print-out to get your biometrics captured. Meanwhile, a temporary receipt will also be issued to every applicant as payment evidence.

Wait for your Card to be Processed

The captured data will be processed and used to create a CHIP-enabled identity card that makes you a legitimate member of the union. You will get notified when these cards are available for pickup at the branch you registered. Then, you can pick it up.

While it may not be compulsory for you as a taxi or bus driver to become a registered member of the union, being a part can help you contribute your quota and ensure that your interest and that of other drivers are well-represented.
