Job Description

Education and Technical skills required

The minimum requirement for most hospitals is a secondary school leaving certificate or equivalent. However, some hospitals may also require security officers to have a Higher National diploma or even a degree if they want such a candidate for the "Chief Security Officer - CSO'' position. Coupled with educational qualifications, hospital security officers must have specific technical skills to perform their duties effectively. These skills include:

• Good communication and interpersonal skills:

Great communication and interpersonal skills are important for hospital security officers to establish trust and build positive relationships with patients, staff, and visitors. They help to create a comfortable and receptive environment within the hospital. 

• Ability to handle firearms and other weapons (if required).

Some hospital security officers may be required to carry firearms or other weapons as part of their job duties. Orientation Training

This is designed to introduce new security officers to the hospital environment and help them learn about the hospital's policies and procedures, emergency protocols, and basic security techniques. They are also familiarized with the layout of the hospital and the locations of important areas such as emergency exits, first aid stations, and security control centers. The training typically takes place during the first few weeks of employment, and it may be delivered through a combination of classroom instruction, on-the-job training, and e-learning modules - as the health institution deems fit.

On-the-job training (OTJ)

During on-the-job training, security officers work under the direction of experienced personnel who provide them with guidance and support as they perform their duties. This type of training enables security officers to learn from their mistakes and develop the skills and confidence necessary to perform their duties as time goes on. The goal of this training is to verify that security officers are fully prepared to handle a range of situations that may arise within the hospital setting. 

Continuous education/training

Nobody really stops learning and this applies to security officers too. Continuous education and training may include new security technologies, emergency response protocols, legal and ethical issues, and effective communication strategies. Security officers can also self-teach themselves by going to YouTube to watch videos and learn about other important techniques.

Hospitals are open 24/7, and they require continuous security services to ensure the safety of patients, staff, and visitors.  Moreover, hospital security jobs are essential roles that cannot be easily automated or outsourced. Security officers must be physically present within the hospital environment to perform their duties.
