Google fires hundreds, predictions are AI( Artificial Intelligence) will take over the jobs

There was a recent layoff at Google and it has hit the core engineering and Google Assistant product hardware and software guys.

Earlier this week, Google sent out a statement that it is looking to responsibly invest in its biggest priorities and the significant opportunities ahead. “Some teams are continuing to make these kinds of organizational changes, which include some role eliminations globally,” the company added.

Although Google announced the elimination of several hundred positions within engineering, hardware, and Assistant teams, the significant impact dawned on its augmented reality hardware division. These layoffs are part of cost-cutting measures outlined by Google and Alphabet executives, who committed to reducing expenses and thought to do it while the year is still very young.

On the day these layoffs were disclosed, Google made another decision to discontinue 17 "underutilized" features of Google Assistant. These include functionalities like playing audiobooks, sending emails, or initiating a meditation session with Calm through voice commands.

The AWU (Alphabet Workers Union) had taken their X page to describe the decision of the Google company as "needless".

"Tonight, Google began another round of needless layoffs. Our members and teammates work hard every day to build great products for our users, and the company cannot continue to fire our coworkers while making billions every quarter. We won’t stop fighting until our jobs are safe," they tweeted.

While Google is just coming through with its layoffs in early 2024, so many other technology companies have also cut off jobs for one reason or the other before now. Meta cut more than 20,000 jobs, Spotify also dismissed about 17% of its global workforce in December, last year.

Reports have somewhat revealed that the jobs of these Google Assistants will be replaced by newer Artificial Intelligence as Google has reportedly hinted before now that it was leveraging its Generative AI Chatbot bard to build a new version of Google Assistant.

Since Google had earlier talked about adding AI generative capabilities to its virtual assistant, this is where we say that artificial intelligence has actually started taking people's jobs as projected.

This is not the first time Google is cutting jobs but this time it is alarming to see even the hardware team responsible for Pixel, Nest, and Fitbit go.
