Common Interview Questions for Security Jobs

If you are currently reading this piece, it means you did a great job crafting your security guard resume and now, you are ready for an interview. As usual, we got you! Interviews are part of the job application process and this means that there are no two ways to do it except you attend one. During an interview, you meet with the hiring manager or employer who asks you relevant questions that you must provide impressive answers to. Your answers to these questions will determine if the potential employer will consider you for the role or not. While we may not be sure of the exact questions your interviewer plans to ask you, we have curated some security job interview questions you are likely to come by. 

Why do you want to work as a security personnel? 

The job of a security guard/officer is perceived to be a very sensitive one. So, when your interviewer asks why you want the job, they want to be sure that you understand what the job entails and that you are aware of the challenges that may arise while you carry out your responsibilities. Also, the interviewer may need to hear that you are fit for the role. To answer this question well, you can say: 

"I've always had a thing for keeping people and properties safe, and now that I know that I can play a direct role in making that happen, I am not hesitating. I know that it requires me to have a strong sense of duty and responsibility towards others and I am excited to make this happen." 

How long have you worked as a security personnel? 

When different employers put out job postings, they include the years of experience they would prefer to work with, for reasons best known to them. For some, it may be that the organization is a big and busy one and they would need a highly experienced security person. So, when asked this question, your employer wants to confirm that you have the necessary skills and expertise to navigate the workload and complexity of the job. You can give your answers like this: 

"I have worked in a security guard role for about 4 years, and during this period, I have learned on the job, gained valuable skills, and contributed to the safety of different people and the environment. I have worked in both corporate and residential environments where I conducted regular guarding, maintained access control, and responded to all security incidents." 

What security skills do you have? 

Security jobs require that you are up and doing most of the time. To accomplish most tasks as security personnel, you need relevant skills. Now, when your interviewer asks you this question, they want to be sure that you have all it takes to fulfill your obligations for a security job. To answer this question, you can say: 

"As security personnel, I am capable of making good decisions even under pressure. I am aware of the number of people I get to interact with daily, so I have honed my communication and customer skills excellently. Also, I have great situational awareness skills that allow me to take preemptive measures and respond quickly to any security concerns. Likewise, I am physically capable of attending to major problems around a certain environment."

Are you comfortable with working night shifts or irregular hours?

People and properties are to be protected at all times and this calls for security guards to be at work even at irregular hours depending on the decision of the organization. So, when your interviewer asks this question, they want to know If you are aware of this condition and also if you wouldn't mind being available during these critical times. Your answer to this question can come off like this:

"As security personnel, I fully understand the importance of providing round-the-clock protection. Criminal activities and security threats are not limited to the standard 9-5 schedule, and neither should my commitment to safeguarding those I serve. My commitment to the security profession extends beyond standard working hours and I am available to fulfill my obligations at all times."

How do you handle stress and pressure in high-tension situations? 

Security guards are also hired for large events in large cities. In this case, there is a lot to deal with which includes a large crowd, uncooperative individuals, and even emergencies; these situations can be really demanding such that it puts so much pressure on the security personnel. When your interviewer throws this question, they want to know your coping mechanism and how you shrug off stress. Your answer can be: 

"During intense situations, I leverage composure, clear communication, and short breaks. These three hacks help me to think rationally and make good decisions even in the commotion."

Have you ever undergone security training? 

Some organizations prefer that a job candidate has undergone training and is certified to work as a security personnel for various reasons which may include competence, risk reduction, and improved professionalism. So, when asked this question during an interview, you can reply by saying: 

"Yes, I have participated in comprehensive security training and obtained relevant certifications. During my training, I learned about risk assessment, emergency response protocols, access control procedures, and different surveillance techniques. Over the years, this knowledge has helped me handle security challenges professionally." 

Tell us about one remarkable feat you pulled as a security personnel

Your interviewer wants to see how many problem-solving skills you have to perform excellently in the security job role. If this question comes your way, think of a time you were able to handle a difficult situation effectively, reveal your resourcefulness, quick thinking, and most importantly the impact you made to save the situation. Here is an example of how to answer the question: 

"During an event that had the presence of notable individuals, an individual was acting suspiciously around the " no premises" area. I approached the person to engage in a conversation and assess further. While we conversed, I noticed his restlessness and attempt to gain unauthorized access to the event room. While remaining composed, I calmly informed the person that his actions were not allowed. This person became even more confrontational and I had to alert the team members about the issue. 

To prevent the incident from escalating such that it would disrupt the event, I kept a cool conversation with the individual until the other team members and law enforcement crew arrived to get the person out of the venue."

Security job is an extensive one and this means that the interview questions can come from different angles. You can't be certain what they would be but you can prepare to answer any of the questions if you really want the job.
