Common Interview Questions and Answers for Copywriters

As a copywriter, if you would be attending any job interview soonest or in the future, the best way to ace such an interview is to prepare adequately. Preparation could be done in different ways which include researching the company, what you are expected to do in the role, the location of the organization, and many more. However, the core of interviews are questions and answers; while you have no idea what questions you may encounter, you can still prepare. This is why we've curated some common interview questions and answers for copywriters. Read on. 

How long have you been a copywriter and how has the experience been? 

The organization may be looking to hire a copywriter with a certain work experience, so they want to be sure you fit into their expectations. Also, the hiring manager wants a glimpse into what you think about copywriting and the depth of your knowledge in the field. So, you can say: 

"I have been working as a copywriter for (? years). Over the years, I've really come to enjoy what I do. I started my career as a copywriter intern at (name of company) where I worked on several projects and honed my skills in crafting great and catchy copies for different types of audiences. On the job, I also learned how to understand a client's brief, conduct market research and collaborate with teams to deliver an exceptional product. Two years ago, I moved to a new company to resume as a full-time copywriter where I have expanded my expertise in digital marketing and optimizing copies for different online platforms."

How do you get inspired to produce a copy?

It's a well-known fact that copywriting requires enough critical thinking and creativity. If your interviewer is asking this, then they want to know about your creative process and ability to create interesting copies that can resonate with the audience. To answer this question, you can say: 

"I commit to several strategies to get inspired. This includes researching the client's brand, needs, preferences, and voice. This gives me some motivation and also helps me align my copywriting ideas with their goals. Also, I find inspiration by spending so much time reading about the trends, studying competitors' campaigns, and analyzing successful copywriting samples. Another opportunity I leverage is brainstorming with colleagues as well as having a quick chat with friends, all of these can yield cool ideas that can help me get to work." 

Do you have a Copywriting style? What is it like?

As a copywriter, you will be expected to work with several brands that have, over the years, developed a voice and a tone. The interviewer wants to know if you can adapt your writing style to suit the needs of different brands. While explaining that you do have a copywriting style, also, talk about your flexibility.  You can say that; 

" Yes, I have a copywriting style that can be described as ( creative, persuasive, or your copywriting style). However, I strive to make sure that my copies are engaging, concise, and knitted to fit the target audience. Each brand has a unique voice, so I understand the need to also align my writing style with the brand's guidelines."

Do you Optimize your copies for SEO? How do you do that? 

The goal of this question is to determine whether you have the knowledge and skills to create a copy that is both engaging to readers and also optimized for search engines. Your answer to this question can be: 

"Yes, I do. SEO is important to ensure that content is reaching the right audience. Therefore, I ensure that the copies I write are properly optimized for search engines while maintaining readability and engagement for human readers. Usually, I leverage keyword research, on-page optimization, natural integration, compelling headlines, and high-quality content."

How do you handle any type of feedback? 

Your interviewer may be looking to see what you do with feedback, both positive and negative. Do you sulk and go unproductive when you receive negative feedback or make plans to do better? Your response can be. 

"Feedbacks are great and are more like a personal metric for creatives. So, when I receive feedback, regardless of its nature, I handle it by listening actively to what the person has to say, asking questions to get a deeper understanding of the person's point of view, reflecting on it, and evaluating its validity, then taking action." 

Do you see yourself as a Copywriter in 5 years? 

When the interviewer asks this question, it is to check if you will be committed to working with the company in this role for a reasonable time. There are cases where people join an organization, work for 6 months and just leave because they have plans to transition to other roles. Also, the interviewer wants to know if you are keen on your professional growth and if it fits into the company's culture. So, you can say: 

"For me, copywriting is not just a job but a life and a bulk of emotion. I am too intentional about developing my skills continually and in 5 years, I see myself as a celebrity and first-class copywriter who is giving back to society by preaching the good news of copywriting and impacting individuals who want to start as copywriters." 

What is the most challenging part of being a copywriter? 

Everyone encounters challenges professionally; your interviewer is aware of this and may want to know how you address your career challenges. Your answer can be: 

"The most challenging part of being a copywriter, in my experience, is blending creativity with client's expectations. As much as I want to be very creative, copywriting requires a balance between artistry and strategic thinking and sometimes, finding that sweet spot can be a challenge." 

How much do you enjoy working with a team?

As a copywriter, you must enjoy collaboration; the hiring manager wants to be sure that you are aware of this. Answer the question by saying; 

"I really enjoy working with a team and believe that collaboration is necessary to achieve exceptional results. Also, for me, a copywriter, teamwork brings new ideas, expands my creativity, and produces high-quality work." 

You can't be sure of what questions you will come by but preparation makes you more confident and convenient during the interview.
