Average Salary of an Orthopaedic Surgeon in Nigeria

Average Salary of an Orthopaedic Surgeon in Nigeria

In our previous article, we discussed the skills, sub-specialties and job description of an orthopedic surgeon. While it may sound like a lot of work with a mist of fun, we are sure you want to know what is in it for you financially. Something like, is the salary worth it? How well do they get paid? Is there a high difference in salary compared to being just a medical doctor? We know you have these questions and we have done our research so that you can have an idea of how the pay works.

How does the pay work?

Orthopaedic surgeons work in different hospitals in Nigeria which means that there may not be a uniform salary depending on the payment policy of individual hospitals, the work experience, work location, skills, and expertise of the orthopedic surgeon. An orthopedic surgeon who works in a hospital on Lagos Island may earn more than someone who practices in a hospital on the mainland. The same thing applies to experience; most hospitals may have surgeons with more experience and will pay them higher salaries than those with little experience. However, if you are lucky enough to know your onions, you can be paid more too.

Also, some orthopedic surgeons are not fixed to a particular hospital, they work as freelance surgeons and are hired by hospitals that do not have Orthopaedic surgeons or hospitals that need a more competent person. This person is not paid every month but immediately after the job is done which also explains why the salary of orthopaedic surgeons is not the same across the board.

Do Orthopaedic Surgeons get other benefits different from salary?

Yes, they do. The other benefit of being an orthopedic surgeon is packaged by their organizations and some of these benefits include:

  • Life insurance

  • Health insurance

  • Dental Insurance

  • Vision insurance

  • Paid time off

  • Retirement plan

  • 13th-month salary

  • Long-term disability

  • Short-term disability

  • Professional liability coverage

As stated earlier, these benefits are handed out by their organizations. While some hospitals go by the list above and give out all of the benefits to their orthopedic surgeons, some only do a few. Other surgeons even claim to receive none of the benefits.

How much salary does an Orthopaedic Surgeon take home?

According to salaryexplorer, the average salary of an orthopedic surgeon in Nigeria is NGN1,460,000 per month. However, the salary ranges from NGN 774,000 to NGN 2,200,000 monthly. Salaryexplorer indicated that these salaries are before tax deduction and may differ across different organizations and locations after tax has been removed. We would love to remind you that this salary range is based on research and takes a different turn depending on the factors we talked about earlier.
