Following the first massive layoff of its staff in January, Amazon has decided to lay off another 180 employees this month, November as part of its restructuring process. This time again, the layoff is pulling out the workers in the games division of the company, specifically, Crown Channel and the Game Growth; the company says it will now focus on Prime Gaming.
According to the Vice President of the Amazon Games, Christoph Hartman, the goal now is to concentrate the company's resources, especially the areas that hold the greatest potential to propel the business ahead. Also, he stated that the company is taking this decision because they have assessed the wants of their customers and discovered that they enjoy the monthly free games the most.
When Amazon sent some of its workers off in January, they were only about a hundred, but now, the numbers are doing 180, a whole 80%. Then, the decision was that the layoff was initiated so that the company could continue to invest in internal development efforts, and the teams would continue to grow as their projects progressed.
The layoffs happening with Amazon's gaming division had been foretold by the company itself but this does not annul the fact that the company still stays committed to its internal game development. Over the years, Amazon has made significant strides in various gaming initiatives, revealing dedication to innovative projects and technological advancements. Their efforts have resulted in the creation of engaging gaming experiences, leveraging their resources and expertise in the industry. Also, it has actively invested in building active communities around gaming, contributing to the growth and vibrancy of the gaming ecosystem.
Hartman expressed pride in the teams' efforts, emphasizing their exploration of new domains through weekly content on Crown Channel and their endeavors to assist publishers in accessing fresh audiences through Game Growth. However, what must be done must be done to put things in place perfectly.
In the mail he sent out, he acknowledged that this would be the second time this year that Amazon is laying off workers but it's all for good and the company is looking to develop and turn in great games with high potential. He also mentioned that their studio teams were expanding, and their roadmap appeared promising. He further emphasized their concentration on forthcoming publishing launches such as Throne and Liberty, and Blue Protocol, as well as future endeavors like the Tomb Raider and The Lord of the Rings games, alongside their collaborations with Glowmade and Disruptive Games.
It was noted in the mail that their internal studios were actively engaged in recruitment and hiring for essential positions while developing new intellectual properties. They also highlighted that Prime Gaming remained committed to securing agreements and providing engaging content monthly for its members.
