10 Nigerian Students Awarded Scholarships by ASUU

The academic staff union of universities has awarded 10 students of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria a 2 Million naira scholarship.

It was during a brief interview with the crew at Punch that the branch chairman of the union, Prof.Haruna Mohammed Jibril disclosed this information. According to him, in February 2018, at the National Executive Council meeting held at Gombe State University, a scholarship initiative was introduced to assist financially challenged students in all union branches. He mentioned that as part of the program, the national union granted two beneficiaries N200,000 each to support financially disadvantaged students in their academic endeavors.

Considering that the ABU chapter has been doing this for a while, giving out scholarships, the chairman urged other branches to follow suit. The Chapter extended further scholarships to two students from 2018 to 2022 in alignment with this encouragement.

He said, “This year, when we came back from our meeting at Kaduna State University, we briefed the congress and the congress approved the upward review of the grant to N1.6m.’’

He also stated that a decision was made to release the funds early enough so that students could register in time for the upcoming session. According to him, the students who got the scholarship had a minimum CGPA of 3.0 and were financially incapacitated for a while.

Reportedly, ASUU not only offered scholarship grants to underprivileged students but also distributed palliatives worth N50 million to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in various locations across northern parts of Nigeria.
