You may need to hear about "Garage" if you are a Working-class Nigerian Student

Many Nigerian students attend classes and have jobs on the side. This means that you can meet a 400-level computer science student who is also a software engineer for a company. Usually, the good thing is that they are allowed to work "remotely".

Several years ago, it was not a thing to have students still in school and taking up jobs; most times, they don't even think of that until after graduation. Now that the times have moved hastily, there is even a greater need to balance work, including full-time roles in tech companies and school activities.

Some students probably live in the school environment which sometimes doesn't seem conducive for the type of jobs they have going because of problems such as power instability, lack of privacy, noise disturbances, or limited access to resources outside school hours. These challenges can hinder students' ability to focus on their work and perform optimally.

Considering this, Chuma Onwuoku and a couple of other brilliant people came up with The Garage. Wondering how it was easy for the guys to identify this problem ?- this is because they have walked the path and have been student-tech professionals who had their hassles while diving the road.

About the Garage

According to information gathered from a number of sources, The Garage was founded by people who have experienced the same problem the startup is looking to solve. The founders (Raymond Chuma-Onwuoku, Darlington Nnam, and Peter Ajanwachukwu) are undergraduates who also hold full-time roles at tech companies and believe that a balance is necessary.

The Garage is a startup specifically created for undergraduates who are students, currently have a remote job, and would like to enjoy resources and equipment that makes their work seamless. The startup is looking to create convenient co-working spaces at remote campuses nationwide, offering continuous power, and fast internet, and enabling a supportive community. It also intends to provide training, mentorship, job boards, and additional support for students struggling with remote work.

The Garage is on the move

Although The Garage was founded in May 2023, it started functioning on the 13th of November. The founders stated that their work started from the southeast (Nsukka Enugu) as it is a region that houses a lot of tech communities and companies. The startup also revealed its intention to partner with every one of these companies to ensure that working-class students get all they need to be comfortable.

Confirming that this idea was welcomed by a good amount of people, The Garage welcomed a significant number of new visitors, around 317 in total. Impressively, 88% of these visitors became regular users, returning to the platform. On average, each user spent more than 17 hours utilizing the company's services. Also, the company supported three startup teams and has a thriving online community of approximately 1,000 members.

However, not long ago, The Garage hit a total of 5,000 work hours. This total represents the combined hours spent by all users since the company's official opening. While the startup isn't doing badly, it has stated that its next line of action is to explore additional funding options to speed up the process of expanding its operations.
