The term "Upholsterer" is associated with the concept "Upholstery" which is not a common word that is often used and because of this, several people can be unfamiliar with it. The word is usually used within the furniture-making industry and is used to describe the process of providing furniture, especially seats, with padding, springs, webbing, and fabric or leather covers. 

In essence, Upholstery is a skill that requires an individual to know how to cover and pad furniture such that it is comfortable and also, aesthetically pleasing. This means that while the frame for particular furniture is constructed, it is of no use except for the upholstery job done on such furniture. So much effort must be put into ensuring that both the look and the feel of the furniture meet the functional and aesthetic expectations of the client's request. An individual who is involved in making sure that furniture looks its best is called an"Upholsterer". 

Job Description of an Upholsterer? 

Upholsterers work on furniture frames, measuring, cutting, and sewing clothing that will fit each piece, then add pads, springs, and web to put the furniture in shape and ensure comfortability. For the padding, the upholsterer uses foams and other materials to enhance the softness and shape of the furniture. Apart from fixing new furniture, they can also revamp old ones and make them look new again. Furthermore, an upholsterer is also expected to take detailing and finishing into consideration as they are the core of ensuring the final product meets high-quality standards. This process may include a lot of stitching and seamwork, pattern alignment, and button tufting amongst many others.

How to become an Upholsterer

Upholstery skills are better learned from the industry and not necessarily a university thing. If you would like to become an Upholsterer, it is best to find a furniture-making hub around you, see if it is where you can learn, and don't take time to enroll. It may take you a while to get the hang of things but if you are consistent with learning, you will continue to grow until you become a professional yourself. Since the job requires so much creativity, you may have to learn every day and of course, make money while at it. If you would like to try out new designs, you can even watch videos on YouTube and try them out with your subsequent tasks or jobs. 

How much Money does an Upholsterer earn per month? 

Most Upholsterers work individually and because of this, their salary cannot exactly be determined. Some of them can take on multiple projects simultaneously or establish long-term relationships with clients that come back over and over. And, even if an upholsterer has to work with a company, it may be on a contract basis. Contractual arrangements are common in the upholstery industry and it involves being hired for specific projects or a defined period. 

However, an upholsterer can earn up to N90,000 or more per month, according to paylab. N90,000 is not the "peg" but depending on the amount of projects they get in a particular month, they can earn more.
