Sim Enrollment, better known as Sim Registration is a compulsory activity for anyone looking to purchase a new sim in Nigeria. Way back in 2010, April precisely, Nigeria's Communication Commission directed that all types of sims purchased should now be registered before use. This means that if you buy any type of sim - Mtn, Airtel, Glo, or 9mobile, it must be registered before you can be able to make calls, send messages or even use the internet with it. This action requires that network subscribers provide some information and confirm their biometrics. The NCC says that the purpose of implementing the new style is not irrelevant or to stress Nigerians but to improve data security. 

If you already wondering if subscribers get to register the sims on their own, the answer is No. You can not enroll your sim independently, you need to visit a sim registration center around you where you get to meet a Sim Enrollment Officer. 

Who is a Sim Enrollment Officer? 

A sim enrollment officer is an individual who has been given the responsibility and authority to help subscribers register their sims after purchase. In some states within Nigeria, you may find them in some small offices in strategic places, retail stores, and service centers that have been branded according to the network they work for. However, some of them can even work on multiple networks which means that if you have both an MTN and Airtel sim, they could help with the registration of both. At the same time, we have some of them that are loyal to just a brand - they only allow subscribers to register their sims if they belong to the network they work. 

How Necessary is Sim Enrollment? 

Just like we have mentioned earlier, a sim is good as useless if a subscriber does not register after purchase. But, also, it's more for privacy reasons, according to the NCC. When Nigerians register their sims, the NCC automatically has a database of sim owners in Nigeria and this allows private communications to be tracked and this can lessen the impact of crimes and misconduct in the country. 

Job Description of a Sim Enrollment Officer

• Explaining the importance of sim registration to new subscribers. 

• Addressing subscribers in a cool and friendly manner, gently responding to their questions, and solving any issues they might have. 

• Collecting subscribers' information for registration. 

• Resolving identity issues and telling subscribers what they need to do to get it fixed. 

• Inputting the subscriber's information into the NCC database. 

• Carefully checking through all means of identification provided by each subscriber to avoid mixups and errors. 

• Refraining from all sorts of unauthorized practices and urging subscribers to only activate their sims at accredited centers. 

What tools do Sim Enrollment Officers work with? 

Sim Enrollment Officers do not work with a lot of tools. However, they must have a smartphone which is mainly used to take passport photographs of the subscribers, fix their biometrics, and input the data on the NCC website for confirmation. Also, they can have a phone that can be used to test these sims after enrollment. Although subscribers are implored to wait for some hours before launching the sims, it still gets tested because subscribers must receive a message that confirms that they have just activated the sims.  

As long as more and more people purchase sims, sim enrollment officers have their jobs intact.
