The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has released the results of the recently concluded 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination denying over 4000 candidates theirs.
According to the board, the 4,878 results that were withheld belong to candidates who have refused to return the learning support materials provided to them during the examination.
To find a fix to this, candidates affected have been advised to reach out to their respective schools/examination centers. Also, WAEC reportedly warned candidates to be cautious of individuals offering result upgrades for a fee, stressing that results are secure and can be verified through its authentication system.
Apart from the candidates who could not get their results because they held on to learning materials, the results of 839 candidates were completely invalidated due to their possession of mobile phones inside the examination venues, the subject results of 4,280 candidates were retained and the complete results of 1,005 were nullified due to suspected infractions.
After investigating irregularities reported during the examination, the 35th Meeting of the Ghana Examinations Committee on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, made the following decisions: Subject results of 3,647 candidates were canceled because they brought unauthorized materials like notes, textbooks, and printed material into the exam halls. Also, the entire results of 839 candidates were revoked for having mobile phones in the examination venues.
"Withholding of Subject Results of 4,280 candidates and the Entire Results of 1,005 for various suspected offenses; Yet still, some subject results of candidates from 235 schools have been withheld for collusion and the use of artificial intelligence-generated answers.” The committee said.
However, the examination board has confirmed that these cases are still under investigation and that It will provide login details to school authorities, allowing them to access their students' results.
The examination board said in a statement, "The West African Examinations Council wishes to inform its numerous stakeholders that it has released provisional results of candidates who sat for the WASSCE for School Candidates, 2023 (Ghana Only Version). The Council will make available login details to heads of schools to enable them to access the results of their candidates.”
Also, according to the council, a combined total of 448,674 candidates registered for the examination, comprising 212,453 males and 236,221 females from 975 schools. This figure indicates a 5.8% increase compared to the 2022 entry figure of 422,883. Out of the total, 3,404 candidates, constituting 0.75%, were not present during the examination.
