See what to do when you are at a career crossroad

Career crossroads are inevitable and at some point in a career journey, you may need to make certain decisions, but usually, it is about what to settle for. The indecision that comes with picking a career path usually stems from having multiple skills. You could have skills related to graphic design and also software engineering and because of this, you may find it difficult to choose one path to focus on. Sometimes, it could even be that you don't know if it's a good idea to leave your current job for another one that looks promising but you are unsure. Once you find it difficult to decide on your career, it means that you are at a crossroads.

Are career crossroads normal?

Yes, career crossroads are normal and it only shows that you are moving towards an opportunity to grow beyond where you have always been. So, if you can't make a decision, it doesn't mean that you don't know what you should be doing but you only just need to make the right move. It can be very sensitive to make career decisions but if you need to, do the following:

Cut yourself a bit of Slack

If you really need to make a good decision, relax because chances are you are already uptight and you may not get a clearer picture of what you need to do. You may have been overthinking it which could also cause some bias in your decision-making. So, take your mind back to point 1, release all residual thoughts, and be calm about the situation.

Know your why

Give reasons for all the activities that you are currently engaged in. If you make videos regularly, ask yourself why you are doing it. Are you trying to get better at a skill? Is it for work ? Knowing why you are in a particular line of career or not in it can help you make a better decision. You can also weigh your options if there are two career paths in the picture. More like, why am I doing product photography? Would I enjoy being a full-time chef? Ask yourself all the possible questions and write down the answers. It makes the process better.

Ask for suggestions

It doesn't have to be anything serious, you could do "Hey Mary, Do you think I am a great photographer?" Most times, your friends see you closely and if they are honest people, they can always tell the truth. Mary can say "I think you are excellent at cinematography." If she pulls a laugh along after saying this, chances are she's saying that you are going to make a better cinematographer than a photographer. You can do this with a couple of your friends and gather a few data that you can work on.

Be fair with your decision

Be fair with making a decision when you are at a career crossroad. Don't be too afraid to consider your passions, strengths, and long-term goals. Take time to evaluate your options, weigh the pros and cons, and make only a decision that sits with your values. It's the point where you need to be honest with yourself and consider multiple perspectives before settling.
