As technology advances and the internet continues to pull the world together, the idea of freelancing has become more popular. Freelancing is a work arrangement that allows individuals who are self-employed to offer their services to clients on a project basis. Practically, this means they don't have a specific boss and are answerable to different people who need their services.
Freelance jobs can be seen as attainable, especially for individuals who are heavy on independence, flexibility, and creativity. Usually, freelancers are experts in fields such as writing, designing, programming, marketing, and lots more. They carry out their jobs as a project, and their income depends on the number of projects they take on. However, to succeed as a freelancer in Nigeria, it is essential to have certain skills that will enable you to meet the demands of clients and make your cool cash in the crowded market. Some of these skills are not talked about enough, but you need them.
Marketing skills
As a freelancer, to successfully find clients and build a sustainable business, you must be able to sell yourself. Freelancers are essentially their brand and marketing can help showcase what you have got, and also your experience. While your client is interested in working with you, continuously help them see reasons why they can trust you with their projects. Understand what your clients need, tailor your marketing message, and make it more effective.
Also, develop a unique selling proposition (USP); this is a statement that explains what sets you apart from your competitors. What skills or experience do you have that makes you different? Why should a client choose you over someone else? Develop a clear USP that you can use in your marketing messages.

Negotiation skills
Negotiation is the process of discussing and reaching an agreement with your client. The subject of discussion may include pricing, project scope, and deadlines. While negotiating, it is necessary to establish a fair price for your services, as this can help you to avoid underpricing your work and leaving money on the table. Also, help your clients manage their expectations by clearly communicating project scope, timelines, and deliverables. By negotiating expectations early on, you can avoid misunderstandings and be sure that everyone is on the same page.
Networking skills
Building a potent network is necessary to help you find new clients and learn about job opportunities. For instance, other freelancers take jobs, and for some reason, they have to outsource them to other freelancers. This change will only come to you if you are in the right community; while freelancing can be a lonely business, good networking skills can let you share your ideas, get feedback and even collaborate with other creatives on projects.
Relentless work-ethic
Freelancers mostly work independently, without a boss or manager to supervise their work. This means they need to be disciplined to stay on track and meet their goals. A relentless work ethic helps freelancers to maintain focus, stay productive, and accomplish their objectives. Also, this skill is a combination of a huge commitment to excellence, and a willingness to go the extra mile.
Time management
One of the biggest challenges that freelancers face is managing their time effectively. With multiple projects, tight deadlines, and the need to constantly search for new clients, freelancers must be able to prioritize their tasks, manage their schedules, and stay focused to succeed. Effective time management can help you prioritize your tasks, allocate your time wisely, and ensure that you complete projects on time.
Self-Motivation
Impostor syndrome can be costly, therefore, as much as you would like, learn to always gas yourself up! You are responsible for managing your time, setting your schedule, and meeting deadlines; this means that you are doing a lot. Do not doubt your knowledge and abilities so that you don't have clients taking advantage of them. Constantly, you need to inspire yourself after every completed project; this is what keeps you going.
