More tech jobs go off the rail as eBay fires 1,000 workers

Online Marketplace, eBay has announced that it would be firing about a thousand workers which amounts to about 9% of its total workforce because it hasn't been a good time for the company business-wise.

Jamie Lanone, the CEO at eBay wrote in a blog post tagged ''ensuring eBay's long-term success" that the business is facing external pressures, such as the challenging macroeconomic environment and because of this, they have chosen to re-strategize.

"Despite facing external pressures, like the challenging macroeconomic environment, we know we can be better with the factors we control," she wrote. eBay has long been in the market, as far back as 1995, and over the years, with more than 12,000 employees,  it has moved through every rollercoaster of the e-commerce business.

According to Jamie, in the last three years, the company has implemented significant transformations in their offerings across various categories and ramped up innovation at eBay. Also, In sectors where they are allocating resources, there has been a consistent rise in customer satisfaction and a substantial enhancement in growth.

Now, it's also a strategy trying to cut off some workers. "The most significant and toughest of these decisions is to reduce our current workforce by approximately 1,000 roles or an estimated 9% of full-time employees," Jamie wrote.

Also, the CEO shared that they plan to scale back the number of contracts they have within their alternate workforce over the coming months.

"These are not actions we take lightly — and we recognize the impact they will have on all eBayers. We have to say goodbye to people who have made so many important contributions to the eBay community and culture, and this isn’t easy,'' Jamie sympathized with the affected employees.

She also said that, soon enough, they would commence notifying employees whose roles had been eliminated and initiate a consultation process where necessary. The leaders would communicate the news directly through Zoom, and once the notifications in their respective groups were completed, the VP or eLT member would send an email.

Jamie reiterated that the changes are difficult but she's looking ahead, being more focused, stronger, and ready to create a even more functional eBay for the customers with the help of every other person currently in the company.
