More Jobs off the road as YouTube Fires 100

The restructuring program promised by Google is touching almost every area of the tech company as 100 people working on YouTube are now being laid off. Just last week, employees working within the Voice Assistant, Hardware and Engineering had to leave and now, there are even more people who have to leave.

Why are workers being fired from YouTube?

Mary Ellen Coe, YouTube's chief business officer, announced on January 17 in a memo to the staff that the layoffs are a result of restructuring efforts in its creator management and operations teams. Coe mentioned that the changes are driven by the expanding and diversifying creator base, ranging from seasoned creators to a new wave of casual creators making their debut on YouTube, as observed in recent years.

“As the business evolves, we have an even greater need to ensure we’re running the business effectively and meeting the needs of all of our users," said Coe.

Also, according to Coe, the 100 workers who will have to leave their jobs make up about 1.4% of the entire YouTube 7200 population.

Per information obtained from Variety, YouTube has recently encountered increased competition from the popular video entertainment app TikTok. This prompted the platform to introduce a similar feature called YouTube Shorts. Also, to boost growth, YouTube secured an exclusive multibillion-dollar deal for the NFL Sunday Ticket out-of-market games package, extending through the 2029 football season.

So, this is not to say that YouTube is doing any bad but according to them, the restructuring must take place. Also, the layoff spree early this year cut across several organizations and not just Google alone. It must be that these organizations have scheduled restructuring for a new year but unfortunately, they had to let some people go.
