Meaning Of Neco

If you have passed through secondary school in Nigeria within the past 22 years, you would have probably sat for a NECO exam. What is the meaning of NECO? NECO is an acronym for National Examination Council. According to Wikipedia, it is an examination body in Nigeria that conducts the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination and the General Certificate in Education in June/July and November/December respectively.

Meaning Of NECO

Like we righly said in the introductory paragraph of this article, NECO stands for National Examination Council. It was created by former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar in April 1999. It was the first Federal organization to offer subsidized registration to academic candidates in Nigeria.

Functions Of NECO

The National Board for Educational Measurement (NBEM), which was founded by the Ibrahim Babangida administration in 1992 but whose enabling order was only promulgated in 1993, was to be replaced by NECO as part of its mandate. The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), which had previously been solely responsible for the Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE), was given additional duties by the new examination organization. The administration of the SSCE was to be under the sole control of NECO for school-based candidates, and WAEC for private applicants. Midway through 2000, NECO was scheduled to hold its first SSCE.

NECO has 3 main functions which include:

  • Conduct Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE)
  • Conduct Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE)
  • Conduct National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE)
