Bills will not pay themselves, we understand this and it is why everyone needs a job. However, with the unemployment rate in Nigeria striding towards 41%, finding a job becomes even more tasking than ever. When we visit the internet everyday, people share stories of how they send out a lot of job applications and they still can't get a single job.
If you live in Nigeria, then you already know that you must do so much to get yourself a good job and we have decided to help you on your job hunting journey. Rolling out job applications everyday without getting interviews can be discouraging and tiring, so how can you easily get a job? Read on!
Check out these tips to get a job faster!
You may be doing something wrong about your job applications or not. However, it's time to bag the job of your dreams!
Have a Properly Optimized CV/Resume
What if you have the best skills and yet, you can't bag the best jobs? Many people need to understand that the times now have wheels and things are now done differently. If you are writing a resume for yourself, you need to take note of certain keywords that will match the job description a company or employer is rolling out. This means that you have to review your resume each time before applying for a job because if the company/employer uses an ATS (applicant tracking system) to check resumes, it must be able to find related keywords that signify that you might be a perfect candidate for your job. Therefore, more than ever, you may want to be intentional with your resume. When you find a job vacancy, take time to read through the job description, take note of the keywords, and implement them in your resume.
Don't Underestimate the Power of LinkedIn
You never can tell where and when you can get lucky, so build your LinkedIn profile. Everyday, people share testimonials that reveal that they got a particular job or even jobs through LinkedIn.
The idea is not just to be on LinkedIn but also to sell yourself, and use the features - there is a LinkedIn feature that allows you to let the public know that you are open to work. Also, make posts that are educational and informative, something thrilling that would get a hiring manager or a potential employer to visit your profile. It could be a series of interviews from there, you don't know. However, do your part.
You need a Portfolio
Portfolios, just like a good resume, convince a potential employer that you can do the job. A portfolio should include a couple of projects you have carried out in your previous jobs. When selecting projects to build your portfolio, know that you must pick your best works. This is a chance to put your best foot forward and showcase your craft. Also, be sure that every project that will be featured on your portfolio highlights different aspects of your skillset.
Send your applications with a good cover letter
Don't just assume that an employer doesn't need to see your cover letter. Even if the employer doesn't request one, make sure that a cover letter accompanies your resume. Making efforts to get a good job means that at every given opportunity, you should sell yourself! A cover letter gives you a chance to do that, so, go ahead to reiterate your commitment and interest in the position. Also, pay attention to details, some employers specifically ask you to send in a cover letter separately, providing you a space to do that. Don't get so lost in the application process that you forget to follow instructions as stated by the job advert.
Blow your own Trumpet
The true and popular belief is that closed mouths don't get fed.
This is where the proper use of your social media comes in. If you have an active profile on different social media platforms, use it to your advantage. Talk about what you do, the skills you have, your location, and the role(s) you are willing to work in.
A very good platform that allows you to pull such off is Twitter (X); if you get people to repost your tweet, it could reach a wider audience, and your potential employer may be someone within that audience.
Get on Job boards
Of course, you may randomly come across a job vacancy by checking through your Instagram stories or just moving through Twitter. But, if you need to be more intentional about your job search, you should get on job boards such as hubforjobs. These job boards require you to register before you gain access to the job listings. Another advantage that comes with using job boards is that they have features that let you toggle and tweak a few buttons to find the type of jobs that you need. Also, you can get regular updates about jobs in Nigeria or even around you in your mailbox.
Go Harder
If you have to send 20 job applications in a day, do it! Remember, whatever is worth doing is worth doing well. Don't just send a few applications and go off for the next few weeks, then go at it again. Yes, it can be tiring to keep pushing but also understand that nothing will move if you don't push. Send as many applications as you can so that you can expect enough feedback. The more you send, the more interviews you are likely to be invited to.
