Israel Mobolaji Temitayo Odunayo Oluwafemi Owolabi Adesanya a Nigerian-New Zealander who was born on 22nd July 1989 is the current UFC middleweight champion after beating Alex Pereira in an April fight 8 at the Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida. Isreal Adesanya is a professional martial artist, kickboxer, and former boxer. However, he gained prominence with the UFC although he has won titles across all three disciplines stated above. 

Isreal Adesanya currently fights in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Middleweight division as a mixed martial artist where he is the current and two-time UFC Middleweight Champion. 

In kickboxing, Isreal is a former Glory Middleweight Championship title challenger. As of March 21, 2023, he was ranked No. 5 in the UFC men's pound-for-pound rankings.

 

Isreal Adesanya Professional kickboxing career

Adesanya defeated Tim Atonio by unanimous decision in May 2010 to begin his seven-fight winning streak. He won his next six fights in China, nearly all against Wu Lin Feng. His winning streak earned him a spot in the Kunlun Fight 80 kg competition, which took place during Kunlun Fight 2. He was defeated by Simon Marcus in an extra round split decision in the semifinals. Adesanya then made his Glory debut against Filip Verlinden at Glory 15. Verlinden was victorious by unanimous decision. Two years after their initial bout, the two met again at Glory of Heroes 3, with Adesanya winning by unanimous decision.

Adesanya competed in the regional circuit's King in the Ring Cruiserweights II competition in New Zealand. He overcame Slava Alexeichik by unanimous decision in the quarterfinals, Pati Afoa by knockout in the semifinals, and Jamie Eades by knockout to win the competition. He competed in the 2015 Cruiserweights III event six months later. He won the competition for the second time with a first-round knockout of Pati Afoa after technical knockouts of Kim Loudon and Mark Timms in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively.

Moving up in weight, Adesanya competed in The Heavyweights III in 2015. He TKO'd Nase Foai in the quarterfinals and KO'd Dan Roberts in the semifinals before fighting Jamie Eades in the finals. They have previously faced in the 2014 Cruiserweight tournament final. Adesanya won the event final with a unanimous vote.

At the Glory Middleweight championship, Adesanya went on to win five of his next six fights, including wins over Yousri Belgaroui and Bogdan Stoica. Alex Pereira, the eventual GLORY Middleweight champion, defeated him by unanimous decision.

Adesanya competed in the Glory Middleweight Contender Tournament in 2016. In the semifinals, he defeated Robert Thomas by a unanimous decision, and he won the championship by a split decision over Yousri Belgaroui. At Glory Los Angeles, he faced Jason Wilnis for the Glory Middleweight championship. Wilnis won the fight by unanimous decision, though the outcome was disputed.

His final kickboxing bout before switching to MMA was a rematch with Alex Pereira at Glory of Heroes 7. Pereira won the fight by knockout after down Adesanya in the third round with a short left hook.

Isreal Adesanya's Professional mixed martial arts career

He made his professional debut in 2012, defeating James Griffiths via TKO. He won another TKO fight against John Vake before taking a two-year break from MMA. He returned to MMA in August 2015, winning by TKO against Song Kenan. He went on to have an 8-0 record, largely fighting in the Oceanian and Chinese circuits. 

During this time, he won the AFC Middleweight Championship at Australia Fighting Championship 20 by TKO in the first round over Melvin Guillard, as well as the Hex Fight Series Middleweight Championship by KO in the first round against Stuart Dare.

It was announced in December 2017 that Adesanya has signed a contract with the UFC. On February 11, 2018, he made his MMA debut against Rob Wilkinson at UFC 221. He won by technical knockout in the second round. With this triumph, he received the Performance of the Night bonus. 

Adesanya's next bout was against Marvin Vettori at UFC on Fox 29 on April 14, 2018. He won the match in a tie-break. The bout was largely recognized as the greatest of the year, receiving nominations from the majority of MMA news outlets. On October 6, 2019, Adesanya headlined UFC 243 for the UFC Middleweight Championship against Robert Whittaker. Adesanya won the bout by knockout in the second round after being knocked down in the last seconds of the first. This was his fourth win for Performance of the Night.

On March 7, 2020, Adesanya will meet three-time UFC championship challenger Yoel Romero in UFC 248. He won by unanimous decision, with scores of 48-47, 48-47, and 49-46, and successfully defended his title for the first time. Many fans and experts were dissatisfied by both combatants' lack of movement, which led to a rather uninteresting contest in which neither boxer could produce any serious attack. 

On September 27, 2020, at UFC 253, Adesanya  defended his championship against fellow undefeated fighter Paulo Costa. This was the first title battle between two male unbeaten MMA fighters since 2009. He won by technical knockout in the second round. This was his fifth win for Performance of the Night. Following the fight, Adesanya's obvious right-breast gynecoma sparked controversy due to probable PED use, while Adesanya claimed it was due to his marijuana use. At the end of the fight, Adesanya added to the controversy by simulating anal sex on the prone Costa.

Adesanya fought Jan Bachowicz for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship on March 6, 2021, in the main event of UFC 259. Adesanya weighed 200 pounds during the weigh-ins, just five pounds shy of the light heavyweight limit. He was defeated for the first time in mixed martial arts, losing by unanimous decision with scores of 49-46, 49-45, and 49-45.

Adesanya faced Marvin Vettori for the UFC Middleweight Championship again on June 12, 2021, as the main event of UFC 263. Adesanya dominated the bout and won by unanimous decision, with all three judges scoring it 50-45. Adesanya vs. Robert Whittaker for the UFC Middleweight Championship rematch took place on February 12, 2022, at UFC 271. 

The rematch was won by Adesanya by unanimous decision, with scores of 48-47, 48-47, and 49-46. At UFC 276 on July 2, 2022, Adesanya went off against Jared Cannonier. On November 12, 2022, Adesanya fought Alex Pereira, who had two victories over him in kickboxing. Adesanya was defeated via technical knockout in the fifth round, his first defeat at middleweight. 

Pereira and Adesanya fought for the UFC Middleweight Championship again on April 8, 2023, at UFC 287. Adesanya landed a right hook against the fence in the second round, knocking Pereira out, and won the bout and the title. This victory earned him the award for Best Performance of the Night.

Isreal Adesanya's Professional boxing career

In November 2014, Adesanya began his boxing career with a professional debut against two-time Australian champion Daniel Ammann. He received one of two wildcards to the inaugural cruiserweight Super 8 Boxing Tournament. Shane Cameron and Kali Meehan performed at the North Shore Events Centre in Auckland, New Zealand. He lost a contentious unanimous decision after appearing to outpoint Ammann in the quarter-finals.

In May 2015, Adesanya returned to the Super 8 event, which was hosted at Horncastle Arena in Christchurch. The winner of the second cruiserweight series received $25,000 NZD and a new automobile. He won his first professional bout in the first round against fellow New Zealander Asher Derbyshire. In the second round, Adesanya knocked out his opponent. Adesanya defeated Lance Bryant by a majority decision in the tournament's second fight. He defeated Brian Minto by a split decision in the tournament final.
