How to Stay guarded if you Plan to run a POS Business in Nigeria

POS shops are in every nook and cranny of almost every city which makes it a very popular business. It's quite easy for people to leave their homes without having much cash on them because there is a certainty that they can get cash outside as long as they have their ATM cards or can do a mobile transfer.

While the business booms in different locations around the world, it can also be risky if care is not taken. Many have reported cases of fraud in the form of fake alerts and transfers. These types of frauds are the most prominent because if people are not using their cards at the POS, they are making transfers that you have to confirm on your POS machine. Now, what precautionary measures can you take to ensure that you don't fall into the hands of fraudsters while running your business?

Ensure that every customer registers their names and phone numbers before you attend to them

This might look like a lot of work for a transaction that would barely take some minutes but it is better to be safe than sorry. Apart from being cautious of theft cases, a transaction may go wrong and the only way you can track it even better is when you have enough details about this customer. When the customer leaves and you discover that something is wrong, you can always call back. Some of them may not mean harm, so they will be willing to help you sort out what the issue is.

Create a barricade between you and your customer

More serious cases such as having the whole machine stolen can be curbed if there are physical barriers like a glass partition or countertop that separates the attendant from the customers. This way, no one except the attendant alone can gain access to the machine whether they are not looking or something draws their attention away for a while. Moreover, implementing security measures such as locking mechanisms on the POS machine itself can add an extra layer of protection.

Carefully attend to customers who seem too much in a hurry

While some customers might genuinely be in a hurry, it's a different thing for the other type. Some customers come and want to leave immediately before you can suspect what is happening. In such cases, it's essential to remain observant and attentive to any suspicious behavior exhibited by customers who appear overly hurried. This could include avoiding eye contact, refusing to engage in conversation, or exhibiting nervousness.

When you carefully attend to these customers, you can effectively assess the situation and take necessary precautions to prevent potential theft or fraud. This may involve discreetly monitoring their actions, and ensuring all transactions are properly verified.

Don't attend to too many customers at once

Chances are you will have your attention divided and lost if you decide to attend to many customers at once. Also, the risk of becoming overwhelmed and losing focus increases significantly. This can lead to errors in transactions, missed opportunities to detect suspicious behavior, and ultimately compromise the security and efficiency of the POS system. It's important to prioritize quality over quantity when serving customers, ensuring each transaction receives the necessary attention and scrutiny to maintain accuracy and prevent potential security breaches.

Don't give your POS machine to anyone to punch in numbers

As tempting as it might be to give your POS machine to punch in their password or something, don't do it. This practice offers a significant security risk as it exposes the machine to potential tampering or unauthorized access. Instead, always maintain control of the POS machine yourself and input any necessary information on behalf of the customer. This ensures accountability and reduces the likelihood of fraudulent activity or data breaches.

POS business can be a profitable yet risky business and you want to be alert and intentional about the amount of work that you put into satisfying your customers and safeguarding your business every day.
