Job Description Of A Medical Secretary

  • Receive and assist patients as needed
  • Type medical documents (e.g. physician dictations and patient charts)
  • Maintain detailed patient and medical records
  • Manage office communications (e.g. phone, correspondence)
  • Schedule medical appointments
  • Work with insurance companies to process claims
  • Process invoices, bills, and payments
  • Ensure confidentiality of sensitive information

Hospital Secretary Requirements

  • A minimum of a secondary certificate or OND in some cases. However, big hospitals may prefer a university graduate or HND holder in secretarial studies or business administration
  • At least two years of experience working in a medical office environment.
  • Sound knowledge of relevant medical terminology, processes, and practices.
  • Knowledge of patient management software, such as RXNT and Kareo Billing.
  • Excellent computer skills and ability to process a large amount of medical data daily.
  • Proficiency in the medical billing process and working knowledge of health insurance policies.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and solid organizational skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • A friendly, approachable demeanor that will make patients feel welcome and at ease.
