A country is either affected by brain drain or benefits from brain gain. In countries where people find it hard to survive, people will want to leave for another country with opportunities which is a brain drain to the country they are leaving and a brain gain to the country they are going to. This does not only affect a country but also affects employers as well.
What is brain drain
Brain drain is the movement out or outflow of individuals from one country to another to look for better life opportunities. The significant thing here is that this movement consists of skilled, talented, and experienced individuals who leave one country for another in search of better opportunities. This can negatively affect the country they left in so many ways because the country will be short of experienced and skilled personnel. This is called Japa in Nigeria, but the opposite of this term is called brain gain.
Different Types of Brain Drain
There are different types of brain drain, and we shall talk about them below:
Geographic Brain Drain
As the name implies, this means the outflow of professionals and talented personalities moving from one geographical region to another for better opportunities. This movement is mainly between countries and happens because there are no good opportunities in the country. Also, the lifestyle doesn't favor the unprivileged, and the absence of good healthcare services and more has caused Geographical Brain Drain.
Organizational Brain Drain
This is when a group of professional and skilled workers leaves a company for another in search of better benefits. This always happens when the professionals lack stability in the workplace and the company doesn't have better work opportunities. Also, if their impact can be well appreciated in another organization, this and more can make people leave a company, referred to as Organizational Brain Drain.
Industrial Brain Drain
When some personality decides to leave an industry or sector because they don't feel satisfied and want a better offer somewhere else. Industrial brain drain does happen because of a change in the evolution of the economic landscape, the inability to manage changes, either technological or social, also the lack of opportunities that the workers look for
What are the effects of brain drain?
The effect of work drain cannot be over-emphasized because the affected country has seen the effect in many ways, so let us check some of them.
- Loss of talent and skills: if this keeps increasing, there will be more loss of professional, talented, and skilled people. The country will feel the effect and the companies that these left behind. For instance, if you check the rate of Japa in Nigeria, you will see that most of the people leaving are great talents from a company or the country.
- Economic impact: this will not be on the company alone; it will affect the whole country because those who can help advance have left the country. Also, the amount of tax to be realized and used has been reduced because the country's human resources have been reduced. So when we talk about brain drain, it always hurts the country's economic advancement.
- Brain gain for destination countries: as this has some negative effects on the country people live in, it increases the inflow of talent in other countries. The brain gain for the designated countries will be increased; as those professionals are living in a country, they are entering into another country that will positively benefit from such a process.
- Reduction in resources: the drain can also cause some reduction in the resources in the company. In a country with a lot of investment in Health, Education, and Private sectors, the resources or investment can be wasted. This is because if people leave the country after these investments, the resources invested will surely reduce or waste.
- Limited professionals will be available: when the talents and professionals leave the country or some companies, limited professionals will be available. This will affect some companies as they will be forced only to employ those not qualified or experienced. This can reduce the efficiency and productivity of such a company.
How can brain drain be arrested?
To cure the brain drain syndrome from different forms of organization, like government, non-governmental, private or profit-based, public-private, and others, these steps can be taken to arrest brain drain.
- Having a good payment policy: everyone that wants to work is doing it because of money, and if the money cannot cater to their needs, they will leave such a company or organization. Providing attractive salaries to highly talented and qualified people based on their skills, qualifications, and experiences will reduce brain drain. Because if these people find a better opportunity outside the country or another company, they will "Japa."
- Deal with unemployment: if people don't find a job, and after job hunting for several years, if they finally get one outside the country, they will surely leave. This means if the rate of employment keeps increasing, then the rate of brain drain will increase, likewise, that of brain gain.
- Rural Development: the people in the village can also leave the place for the city if some social amenities are not catered for. There are so many things people from the village can enjoy; if they can't get it, we can have a geographical brain drain.
- High tax: if the tax paid by a country's labor is too much compared to their salary, people will surely look for another place they can go to. The tax deduction shouldn't be too high, which will deprive people of enjoying the salary they worked for. The government should look for a way to balance the tax payment of the country. High taxation can jeopardize some people's trust in their country, which will propel their decision to travel out.
- Work culture: this is another thing that can cause brain drain, so work culture must get its balance as this will keep these talented and professional staff. If otherwise, then expect that there will be a different organizational brain drain. People always want to enjoy their job, so if the work culture is not palatable, they will be forced to take a leave. It is normal to have better options because every workplace will not operate the same way. If people start feeling stressed and do not pay more for their output, it can hasten the decision to leave the company.
These are some ways by which brain drain can be addressed; if the appropriate quarters can address the right thing, then they can reduce the outflow (brain drain) of professionals. Also, any organization or country that can meet the needs of people will enjoy more inflow (brain gain).
What is Brain Gain?
Brain gain, as highlighted above, is the opposite of Brain Drain. This refers to the movement or inflow of people into another country to get better opportunities. This practice always brings new opportunities to such countries, which positively affects those countries. Most countries that have allowed this have enjoyed great benefits like high economic growth, infrastructure development, and competitiveness in the global market.
What are the causes of brain gain?
Different factors can cause an increase in brain gain in a country, mostly because the brain drain rate has increased in a country or territory. Below are some of the reasons why there is an increase in the inflow of talents and professionals.
- Increase in career opportunities: when there is an increase in the rate of career opportunities, this always entices people who do not have this opportunity in their country. Everyone wants a good career that will help them have enough to spend and cater to their needs. If there is a report of an increase in salary or better working conditions, this is a great way to entice big talents and professionals. This is why so many people have left their country for another. Most times, some come back after gaining so much experience and money, but they would have been away for a long period.
- Increased education and training facilities: every talent or professional always wants access to a higher education that can make them better in their field. Brain gain will increase when there is an avenue to get more knowledge and be more relevant; this has helped some people to get a better jobs. This why in Nigeria, we have so many people who want to travel out of the country to study. They often become hot cake when they return to their country because they have gotten more experience and exposure.
- Brain gain can happen due to political unrest: if, at some point, the recently concluded election later brings about a hot protest, people will be forced to travel out. It is believed that by traveling out, they are safe, and no unrest can affect them, and most people use that opportunity to get some things done and accomplished. This set of people usually returns after the unrest has died and the country is safe to live in again.
When we talk about brain gain, it is one of the good things for any country or organization; this is why we said that brain drain is the opposite. With some of these causes, many territories will enjoy brain gain more than brain drain.

This is because every skilled and talented person who travels will want to learn more before they return to their country, and because of this, most countries will invest in their education and research services since they know it will entice more people to come.
- It increases international networking: people who want to build a better network beyond the shores of their country will have access to different international networks. Having this different network will greatly benefit the individual as they can use it to accomplish the things needed.
