What is the Nigeria Immigration Service All About?
This is the government organization in charge of overseeing migration in the nation. The Origin of this government agency can be traced to the Nigeria Police Force as it was previously an arm of the Nigeria police force.
In 1958, the service was granted independence. The Chief Federal Immigration Officer served as its head at the time, and the organization was known as the Immigration Department (CFIO).
Under an Act of Parliament, Cap I71, the Immigration Department was formally founded in 1963. At this time, the Department was governed and overseen by the Federal Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the Head of the Department was now known as the Director of Immigration (FMIA).
By 1992, the Immigration Department had undergone a restructuring that resulted in the Director of Immigration’s title being renamed to Comptroller General of Immigration Service.
This came as a result of the restructure, which turned the NIS into a paramilitary group. The current goal of the Nigeria Immigration Service is to develop into a cutting-edge, effective, and efficient immigration service with highly motivated personnel. The agency’s goals also include enhancing Nigeria’s security and prosperity through proactive, efficient, and effective border security and migration management.
