Brief Details About SON

According to the information available on its website, The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) was established by Enabling Act Number 56 of December 1971 – the Standards Organisation of Nigeria cap 412 of the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, with a commencement date of 1 January 1970, when the Organisation started to function. The Act has three amendments: Act Number 20 of 1976, Act Number 32 of 1984, and Act Number 18 of 1990.

SON’s governing body is known as the Nigerian Standards Council. This is the Policymaking body for supervising the administration and financial management of the Organisation. The Director General of the Organisation is the Chief Executive whose responsibilities revolve around the day-to-day administration of the Organisation within the broad guidelines approved by the Council.

The mandate of the Organisation includes the preparation of Standards relating to products, measurements, materials, processes, and services amongst others, and their promotion at National, Regional and International levels; certification of products, assistance in the production of quality goods and services; improvement of measurement accuracies and circulation of information relating to standards.

Functions Of SON

  • SON is responsible for preparing, and establishing standards relating to various products, commodities, measurements, processes, and materials for the certifying of products in Nigerian commerce and industry
  • Responsible for the promotion of these standards at the grassroots, national, regional, and international levels
  • The organization is empowered to seize and confiscate any product or prohibit the sale of such that are below Nigerian standards
  • Compiling a list of products that need standardization
  • Inspecting the quality of processes and raw materials used for production
  • Certification and endorsement of industrial products that meet the standards
  • To carry out inspections and raids of products, materials, and facilities used in production, laboratories, and factories
  • Assistance in the production of quality goods;
  • Improvement of policies on quality and measurement accuracy
  • Public enlightenment and education on matters related to the standardization of products
  • To carry out scientific tests on every product to ensure compliance with standards
  • Developing methods for testing equipment, materials, and supplies including those purchased for government use.
  • Compilation and publication of general scientific data
  • Work with other bodies and international organizations concerned with standardization
  • The Standard Organization of Nigeria provides reference standards for verification. These reference standards provide measures for the calibration of measurements and equipment used in measurements in the country.

Requirements For SON Recruitment

  • Must possess a minimum of Five Credits in no more than two sittings in West African Senior School Certificate (WASSCE), National Examination Council (NECO), and General Certificate of Education (GCE). Credit in English is compulsory
  • Interested applicants must be of good behavior and composure
  • HND, B.Sc, NCE, or an OND certificate from a recognized institution
  • All candidates must have a valid means of identification such as a valid driver’s license, National Identification Card, International passport, Voters card
